Geothermal Energy workshop, 28 November to 9 December 2011
Monday 28 November
TNO is hosting a geothermal energy workshop at the COP17, which will take place from 28 November to 9 December in Durban, South Africa.

The workshop will be geared towards addressing specific themes relevant to the further development of the geothermal sector in Africa. With the relevant stakeholders on board we envisage to provide an excellent platform to develop collaborations.
East African Rift Valley – Extrapolating on Kenya’s Geothermal Project Successes The East African Rift Valley has a high potential for geothermal energy. The geothermal power potential is estimated to exceed 7,000 MW. Despite this large potential, only Kenya and Ethiopia have installed power generating units of around 210 MW.

However, other countries in the African Rift Valley, such as Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania, are also keen to exploit this source of new renewable energy. During the Eastern Africa Market Acceleration Conference in April 2003 it was agreed that the Eastern African Geothermal Development Initiative undertakes to develop a modest 1,000 MW of geothermal power by the year 2025. The current project fund is approximately US$ 18 million, which for the largest part is funded by the World Bank and the United Nations’ Environment Programme.

Other parties involved in the Geothermal Development Initiative are the Geothermal Training Programme, the International Development Agency and the German Geological Agency (BGR). The project proposes to establish a comprehensive program of financial, policy and technical instruments for the promotion of geothermal energy that will directly support the development of viable geothermal energy resources in the African Rift.

Furthermore, the project is designed to actively reduce barriers and to stimulate and facilitate investment through public and private sector partnership through a drilling risk guarantee fund and a technical assistance program and institutional strengthening.
