Interview with Hans van Dam of Global Connection Ltd

Could you introduce yourself and your company?
GLOBAL CONNECTION – Where two cultures unite and speak through the heart…

When we, Hans and Maaike van Dam, went on safari in Tanzania in March 2006, we crossed paths with a young guide, Silver Mmassy, who, over time, has had a huge influence on the rest of our lives. It was not only his knowledge of the English language, but particularly his sociable character and his vast knowledge of the wildlife in Tanzania which was something we noticed immediately.

We agreed with Silver, then still working for a large tour operator, to keep in touch through email. This is how our contact grew overtime. We agreed to take our family on holiday to Tanzania in July 2008. On the one hand, to introduce the Safari world of Tanzania to our children and, on the other, to meet Silver’s family and get acquainted with life in Africa. Through meeting the whole Mmassy family we were able to experience how social and business like these people are.

When we decided to build a motel there, the time was right to start a small company. This is how Global Connection Ltd. came into being and our motel Paradise View was built on the side of Mount Meru. The name Global Connection interprets precisely what we want to bring into practice, to be able to connect people and companies worldwide.

Currently it’s November 2010, and we have 2 Landcruisers coming and going on Safaris. Besides the Safari business we started different other activities. We have 15 Tuktuk's in Dar es Salaam which are used as taxi. Recently we started our own Driving School and Vocational Training Centre, where we teach different languages, wildlife studies, ornithology and hotel management. Also we started a new little lodge and guesthouse in Iringa, Silver’s hometown. Iringa is not far from Africa’s biggest National Park the “Ruaha National Park”. Therefore this location is very interesting as well.

Alongside the business, we would like to fulfil a cultural and social role in the area. We have the idea to support the orphanages in Mto wa Mbu, and create a shelter where we can offer them a safe haven and hopefully employment. Most orphans who stay in these places are AIDS orphans, their parents died of AIDS, and often they are HIV infected themselves as well. Also we joined hands with Mr. Chuwa, who is famous for his tree planting projects. We are hoping for local and international support to realise these projects and we wish everyone a warm welcome to this beautiful country….

What are Global Connection Tours & Safaris’ main activities? Can you briefly describe the company?
Main business is of course the Safari business in Tanzania. If your primary reason for travelling to Africa is to experience an abundance of African wildlife in unspoiled wilderness, then Tanzania should be your destination of choice.

On which projects are you working at the moment in Africa (Tanzania)?
As we just started 2 years ago, most of it is just being realized the past few months. We are very busy with the following:

  • Safari business in Tanzania
  • Also we just started up our Global Connection Driving School. Our school and instructors are certified and practice avid professionalism. We are fully certified and have optimum insurance coverage for our students and instructors.
  • Vocational Training Centre: For all the east Africans who are interested in developing Wildlife skills, we will provide a professional guideline and fieldworks to the amazing National Parks of Tanzania. We will explore more about wild animals, their behaviors, their habitats, the landscapes and the trees in different National Parks, and the history of the specific areas.
  • Global Connection Hotel Management School prepares students interested in a hospitality career. By providing the skills, knowledge, and hands-on training for professional development, hotel management training is a valuable opportunity to get ahead in the resort and hospitality industry. Also we will teach different languages like English, French and Spanish.

What are Global Connection Tours & Safaris’ future plans in Africa?
  • Our future plans are expanding the existing business. We hope to expand the Safari business and get our own agents around the Globe. Part of the strategy to realize this is to set up a new association with colleague tour companies in other African Countries which is called “Africa United Safaris”. Hopefully in the long run as a group we will be able to offer many African destinations and we will be supporting each other in marketing and promotion.
  • At this moment we have our driving school in Arusha, by the end of 2011 we will have 2 branches in Iringa and Mwanza, and within a few years we hope to cover all of Tanzania.
  • We will set up our own lodges in logistic interesting places. We intend to involve the local villagers, and have them as fellow shareholders in the lodges. In this way the local people will also benefit, which in our opinion happens too little in Tanzania.
  • We will support different projects, like the "African Blackwood Conservation Project", initially set up by Mr. Sebastian Chuwa in Moshi. As we have a green heart, we feel obliged to make the world a greener place. Also we will support some orphanages of Mto Wa Mbu to make a start. On the long run we hope to be able to set up our own orphanage, help the children with education and try to give them a better future.
  • We hope to create more business and help Tanzania and other African countries develop their economies, so people will have a better financial position. Therefore we would like to use our networks both in Europe as in Africa.
  • Finally I dream to have my own place in Tanzania, where I can live close to the nature, and where I can feel back to my roots. I feel this is the way people are supposed to live, to avoid that we destroy the Globe with our consuming behavior.

Which African country(ies) are your favourit(s) and why? Or which regions in Tanzania are your favourit?
When I speak for myself, I have only been in Tanzania yet, didn’t visit any other African country. But for sure this won’t take long. We are looking for cooperation with colleague tour operators in our surrounding countries and therefore will soon visit Kenya and Uganda for sure.

How did you hear about the NABC?
I visited a meeting with a Tanzanian horticultural delegation in the Rai last October. The chairman of the day was someone from the NABC. When I explained him my ideas, he suggested me to visit the next week’s meeting to see if a membership would be interesting for me.

Why did you decide to join the NABC network?
After 2 visits to the monthly meetings in October and November, I can say I have met many interesting people, of which many share the same ideas, and our love for Africa. I do think the NABC is a very good network platform, where many people can support each other and give business to each other. I guess when business is good in one African Country, you can copy it to many other countries as well. Therefore you need to have the contacts and networks, which one can find in the NABC group.

Are you satisfied with NABC’s services thus far?
So far I think I met many interesting people, I will absolutely be a member for hopefully a long time.

If you were asked to describe NABC in five words, what would these be?
Great network, Easy to enter, Friendly people, Love for Africa, Business Platform

Which advice would you give to a company that intends to enter the African market?
I would absolutely convince them about the importance of finding a reliable local partner. Without a reliable local partner business can become very difficult, and can even ruin you if you meet the wrong people. But with the right contacts there are plenty of possibilities in many different sectors. When we combine the networks and businessmind we have ourselves in Holland, with the networks of our partners in Africa, I am sure a great future lies ahead of us. Then again, the NABC can be a good tool to meet and find the right people.

  • As sales manager responsible for Africa, I was looking at finding opportunities to open markets in this vast continent, besides the few contacts we historically had.
