By 2050, the population of the world will have grown to nine billion. That poses a threat to the future. For instance, there will be a massive increase in the need for energy and raw materials.

The same will apply to supplies of fresh water and available areas of usable agricultural land. People are very worried about climate change and rising sea levels.
Pioneering technical and scientific breakthroughs are needed if we are to solve the social issues arising from the population growth outlined above. Universities play a key part in this.
TU Delft will therefore be using the symposium to identify specific options for collaboration in the areas of research and education that can be developed between knowledge institutes, government authorities and industry, with regard to current sustainability issues.
During the symposium an attempt will be made to formulate answers to these questions, on the basis of the following four themes: Water, food & health, energy and mobility.
