Ugandan chess queen features in Disney movie

Queen of Katwe portrays the life of Phionah Mutesi (now 20), who learned to play chess in Katwe slum and later progressed to become Uganda's top female chess player - representing her country druing international tournaments. 

NABC's Arne Doornebal interviewed Mutesi in 2011, the year before an American journalist brought out the book 'Queen of Katwe' which resulted in the Disney film set to be released. Mutesi recalled how big an impact chess, and the prize money she won during the chess Olympiade in Russa, had made on here life. “My mother couldn’t believe it. We used the money to buy beds and mattresses, so we didn’t have to sleep on the floor anymore!”
